Russia’s military invasion of Ukraine poses a threat of yet another nuclear disaster for the whole of Europe

27.02.2022

In 1986 the worst nuclear disaster in history was caused by the explosion at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant. On 24th of February 2022, Russian army captured The Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant and took the station workers hostage. According to the Office of the President of Ukraine, Russian troops may be preparing for a provocation at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant and use that as a pretence to damage the plant and the New Safe Confinement and blame it on Ukraine.

The New Safe Confinement is designed to prevent the release of radioactive contaminants and allow for a safe disassembly and decommissioning of the reactor. It took 9 years to build at a cost of €2.1 Billion and was designed to last for the next 100 years.

The world should be immensely concerned, as on the night between 26th and 27th of February, Russia showed its appetite for environmental destruction when Russian military forces fired rockets at the oil depot near Vasylkiv, causing a large-scale fiery explosion. Toxins released by the burning of oil crude and petroleum products are some of the most dangerous and deadly carcinogens, spreading into the air over many kilometres.

Peace in Ukraine means the safety of the entire world. Stop the war in Ukraine! Protect Ukrainians. Protect yourself.
