On 4-5 July 2022, Switzerland jointly with Ukraine will host the international Ukraine Recovery Conference (URC 2022) in Lugano. The conference in Lugano will concentrate on recovery. Lugano will be a unique opportunity for Ukraine to share its Recovery Plan and engage with the international partners to develop the best possible response to the enormous challenges lying ahead.
The following topics will be discussed in Lugano:
Shared responsibility and mutual accountability throughout the recovery process, and the reforms accompanying it, will be just as important as earmarking the resources to enable recovery. Once done well, it will transform the country and modernize its economy. Ukrainian achievements and successful reforms before the war were crucial for Ukraine’s current resilience. Similarly, future reforms are instrumental for a successful recovery and Ukraine’s European aspirations.
The URC 2022 will be complementary to initiatives in support of Ukraine that are already launched or announced and will bring together friends of Ukraine standing with it at its darkest times.
Global Compact Network Ukraine together with Global Compact Network Switzerland & Liechtenstein will hold a special session – “Business contributing to find solutions for energy, climate and food challenges in Ukraine”.
The Russian invasion into Ukraine has far reaching consequences in a variety of areas: such as food and energy security, volatile and broken supply chains. These challenges will not be limited to Ukraine, but due to the globalized world we live in, will pose challenges across the globe.
The war in Ukraine shows that such a crisis causes widespread damage and sets back the progress of the Agenda 2030 and the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals (SGDs).
The future of Ukraine also depends on its ability to maintain and improve the rule of law, strong democratic institutions, a dynamic civil society and a clear anti-corruption policy.
In our workshop, we will explore and exchange on how we as private sector can connect and collaborate to and find solutions for both short- and long-term challenges. What are the preconditions we need from governments, national, regional and international institutions.
We will discuss how businesses can support and influence Governments in the region to fortify their macroeconomic buffers and credibility of their policies to reduce risks and how to strengthen the social systems and institutions to strengthen social safety nets to protect the most vulnerable.
The session will start with welcoming remarks of Tatiana Sakharuk, CEO of the UN Global Compact Ukraine, and Antonio Hautle, Executive Director of the UN Global Compact Network Switzerland and Liechtenstein.
Maksym Timchenko, CEO of DTEK, will be the keynote speaker of the session. He will raise the topic of Ukraine’s energy security:
